It's looking like good news for the hard-pressed transport industry as more and more driving job vacancies appear But experts warn there may be a skills shortage unless more people start training now. There were 25,710 vacancies for heavy goods drivers alone in the run-up to Christmas nearly double that of the same period the year before. CPC Driver Training Roadblock for Haulage Industry in 2013?
Driver CPC was introduced in 2008 for bus and coach drivers and in 2009 for the haulage industry. Since then, over 420,000 drivers have started their training. But time is running out for those drivers that haven't yet undertaken the training. Driver CPC Training is mandatory and all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must complete 35 hours’ training every five years to get qualified and stay qualified. The deadline for the bus and coach drivers to complete their first 35 hours of training is September 2013. Haulage drivers have until September 2014. HGV Cycle Awareness Training
The London Borough of Hackney has introduced an HGV driver training scheme focusing on cyclist awareness. This accredited bicycle safety awareness training course is being run by Hackney Council's road safety team and is the first of its kind to be run by a local authority. The Safe Urban Driving course was developed in conjunction with the Transport for London Freight Operator Recognition Scheme group alongside Cycle Training UK and other councils. As well as classroom discussions, drivers will gain first-hand perspective on cycling in the Hackney area, with participants heading out to cycle the roads with National Standard cycling instructors on the ubitqous Boris Bikes.
